Overview of the Issue: Screening for Domestic Violence in Mental Health Settings
Routine screening for domestic abuse is crucial in helping you see beyond the client’s presenting symptoms, understand her experience, intervene safely, and reduce her need for hospitalization or long-term treatment.
- Safe delivery of mental health services to victims of
domestic violence depends on identifying them as early as
possible. Screen all new or returning clients for domestic
violence before making a treatment plan, regardless of the
client’s age, economic status, sexual orientation or
presenting problem. It is critical to screen for domestic
violence when a couple requests couple counseling, family therapy or
mediation.
- Screening is a process that takes place over several sessions. It is not enough to just ask, “Are you a victim of domestic violence?” Many victims are afraid to talk about it or don’t define what happens to them as abusive.
