Domestic Violence Presentation for Maternal, Infant & Child Health Care Providers

Length: 1 ½ hours

 

Purpose:

 

The purpose of this presentation, consistent with contractual obligations with the Department of Health, is to provide general information to participants about:

 

  • The impact of domestic violence on patients seeking maternal and child health services.

  • The importance of the identification of domestic violence in this patient population through routine screening and the subsequent treatment and referral options discussed with patients.

  • The need for proper documentation of domestic violence in patient records.

  • Overall response, by staff in maternal and child health care facilities, to victims of domestic violence consistent with facility policy guidelines.

 

Goal:

 

The goal of this presentation is to raise awareness about domestic violence and the importance of routine screening of victims of domestic violence to prevent further injury, illness, permanent disability or death and to reduce pregnancy complications.

 

Who Should Attend:

 

The main target audience includes, but is not limited to: physicians, nurses, social workers, patient care providers, medical residents, physician assistants, midwives, and nutritionists/dieticians working in maternal and child health care facilities.(1) The audience may also include non-medical personnel such as: receptionists/secretaries, administrators, janitors.

  1. Maternal and Child Health facilities include programs such as Prenatal Care Assistance Program (PCAP), Women, Infants and Children (WIC), Family Planning Programs, Community Health Care Worker Program, and Perinatal Network.
