This skills-based two-day training for Child Protective Service workers was developed in response to the passage of Chapter 280 in 2002.  It is a mandatory training which focuses on the dynamics of domestic violence and its connection to child abuse and maltreatment.  Experiential learning is an important aspect of this training to enhance participants’ ability to apply the learning to case practice.  This training has been pre-approved by OCFS to meet the Annual In-Service training requirement for CPS caseworkers and supervisors.

What you will learn:

  • Determine how the children are being affected by the domestic violence
  • Recognize tactics of control used by the abuser
  • Assess the impact of domestic violence on the adult victim
  • Interview all family members
  • Assist in developing a plan for safety, intervention, and accountability

How you will benefit:

  • Heightened level of confidence when dealing with the complexities of domestic violence in cases
  • Increased information to interview abuser, non-offending parent, and children
  • Skills to proactively case plan and intervene for the safety and well-being of children and the adult victim through earlier identification of domestic violence
  • Enhanced ability to provide community referrals and resources

Who should attend?

This is a mandatory two-day training designed only for line staff and supervisors who work in the Investigative and Long-term units of Child Protective Services.
