Practical Information for Victims of Domestic Violence Child Protective Services (CPS) and Foster Care Services
If you are being victimized by your intimate partner and also involved with the Child Protective or Foster Care Systems
- You have rights
- You aren’t mandated to speak to CPS
- You may revoke a release at anytime during the investigation
- You have the right to have someone present while speaking to CPS to be supportive to you.
- When interacting with systems in general, your domestic violence advocate from your local domestic violence program can help you navigate and support you throughout the process.
- You can request a Fair Hearing if your case is indicated or founded

At anytime during the process you feel you are not being treated fairly you have the right to contact that workers supervisor.
Child Welfare Agencies
If you are being victimized by your intimate partner and also involved with a Voluntary Child Welfare Agency
- There are no charges for their services
- Child Welfare workers are mandated reporters
- Your worker can help you navigate the other systems
- Ask your worker what other services you may qualify for
- You may revoke a release at anytime
